Ten Best CBD Products for Pain

Best CBD Products for PainThis article will focus on the top 10 CBD oils for potential pain relief.

In January of 2018, The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) removed CBD from its list of prohibited substances. This small but essential change marked a victory for the cannabis industry and for athletes around the world. What does this have to do with pain relief? A lot.

Many professional athletes have been advocating for CBD and fighting against its prohibition in recent years. Eugene Monroe, a former Ravens offensive tackle, was the first NFL player who openly advocated for the use of CBD in treating chronic pain and injuries. For football players, pain is a given. The widespread distribution of opioids in the professional sports world has become as much of a problem as it has among ordinary folks. And now, with fewer doctors willing to prescribe narcotics for pain, many patients have been left high and dry. Stripped of their pain meds and their dignity, many have found themselves not only in debilitating physical pain but with a crippling addiction they were never warned about.

Monroe, who now works for Green Thumb Industries (national cannabis cultivation and activism organization), and other athletes have helped put CBD in the spotlight. While the compound is being utilized for everything from anxiety to dementia to seizure disorders, its rising popularity and use as a possible safe and effective treatment for pain and inflammation are in large part due to athletes turned activists.

The list below lists our picks for the top ten CBD products for potential pain relief, from ingestible tinctures to topical lotions and ointments.

Following this list, you can read a little bit more about cannabidiol, (CBD) how it works, and what makes it so useful in the treatment of pain.

What Is CBD And How Do I Know I Am Getting The Right Product For My Pain?

CBD is an abbreviation for Cannabidiol, a substance found in the cannabis sativa plant. While there are at least 100 specific cannabinoids in cannabis, the two that we know the most about are THC and CBD.

You’re probably already familiar with THC.  It is the psychoactive cannabinoid in the cannabis plant, otherwise known as marijuana. It is associated with the high that is achieved from smoking it, and for many people, it provides a pleasant and relaxing experience. CBD is a cannabinoid also found in cannabis and is associated with a host of possible therapeutic effects. It is increasingly popular because of its natural, potentially healing qualities. Pure CBD oil that does not contain THC is usually crafted from hemp and will not get you stoned. In fact, cannabis strains high in CBD are often ingested or smoked by people who cannot tolerate the sensations of smoking pot.

As access to cannabis continues to increase due to favorable legislation, the CBD industry has experienced rapid growth. But it is important to realize that the CBD market is still in its infancy and is unregulated. When you first begin to shop for CBD oil, you may find yourself overwhelmed with choices. While there are hundreds of products that claim to be CBD oil,  many are mostly hempseed oil. Hempseed oil is beneficial and has some nutritional value, but does not pack the same punch of pure, properly extracted CBD oil. That is why when we compiled our list of CBD for pain relief we used specific criteria when choosing which companies are legitimate.

These criteria are:

• Extraction method:  CBD  oil must be properly extracted by a process known as the supercritical CO2 method. This is the gold standard for CBD extraction. However, some companies use an ethanol extraction process. Provided the solvents used are clean and safe, this method is an acceptable second choice.

• Third-party lab results:  Every company on our list has to ensure their products are tested by an independent laboratory for potency, purity, and the presence of contaminants. The test result should be made available to the public either on their website or upon request. We prefer the transparency of companies who publish results that are up to date and easy to access online.

• Source:  In many cases, industrial hemp grown in potentially unsafe soil is imported for the manufacturing of CBD oil. Companies sourcing their raw product in this way are disqualified. We seek out CBD oils that are extracted from organically grown domestic hemp or certain trusted European growers. You will find that the majority of the CBD oils on our lists are grown organically in Colorado, Kentucky, and New England by growers who care about the quality of their products.

How Does CBD Work For Pain?

Our bodies are equipped with something called an endocannabinoid system. This system is a relatively recent discovery that is still being heavily researched. But we know that the body has naturally occurring endocannabinoids that are similar to the cannabinoids found in cannabis (also called phytocannabinoids) This marvelous system plays a role in regulating many of the functions of the human body like appetite, sleep, and mood.

But just like other systems in the body, the cannabinoid system can malfunction as well.  In fact, some researchers believe that chronic pain and inflammation may be a result of an endocannabinoid deficiency. This could explain why analgesic effects are experienced and the body returns to homeostasis when cannabidiol is used.

When phytocannabinoids are introduced into the human body, they bind to receptor cells and work with our body’s endocannabinoid system to regulate pain perception and in essence, dull it. Not only that, but they put into motion a process where the body actually creates its own solution to the pain. By relaying messages to the brain, inflammation may be reduced, muscles might relax, and relief could be experienced.

Pain relief via cannabis consumption is nothing new.  It has been used in cultures around the world since the dawn of time to relieve many conditions, and there is no shortage of anecdotal evidence to support its efficacy. But science is finally catching up, and there have been many studies to back up these claims.  A two-year study at the University of Michigan revealed that not only is cannabis an effective remedy for pain but that it can also significantly decrease opiate use. In 2015, a 28 study review led by Harvard examined the effectiveness of cannabis for pain, in which the author concluded saying: “Use of marijuana for chronic pain, neuropathic pain, and spasticity due to multiple sclerosis is supported by high-quality evidence.” Studies like these are becoming more common.

Should I Use CBD Orally or Topically For Pain?

Creams and lotions that contain CBD include the oil from the plant which has been combined with a base. This type of product does not enter the bloodstream and works on the naturally occurring CB2 receptors in the body. These receptors are already present as part of the endocannabinoid system. Topical products could potentially be highly effective for reducing the pain of arthritis, inflammation, headaches, cramps, and sore muscles.

CBD oil taken as a tincture or the application of topical creams containing CBD oil are often most effective when they are used together.

Is CBD Oil Legal?

Mostly. Most states have moved towards legislation that makes CBD use legal, but the federal government still drags its feet. The 2014 Farm Bill made growing, processing, and distributing CBD legal across the country, but the DEA still considers hemp to be a Schedule I substance. The legalization of both THC and CBD continues to be controversial and each jurisdiction is different. You should always research your own state to find out the laws particular to your region.
