15 Best CBD Edibles

Best CBD EdiblesEver since Alice B. Toklas whipped up her first batch of Hashish Fudge in the late 1950s, cannabis enthusiasts have been creating their own weed-infused baked goods.  Pot brownies became wildly popular in the 1960s counterculture, and many people from that era have amusing stories to tell about the famed confection. Over the past decade, as cannabis has been approved for medicinal use, commercially produced edibles have skyrocketed in popularity.

During the past several years, while cannabis legislation has been hotly debated, a quiet little revolution has taken place.  Researchers and growers have been able to extract an equally beneficial compound from the cannabis sativa plant called CBD. It is likely you’ve heard a lot about it.  CBD contains many of the same chemicals and terpenes of THC without inducing any psychoactive effects on its users. It has become a popular alternative for people who want to reap the benefits of cannabis without unintended side effects like feeling stoned. What’s more is that CBD, like its sister THC, comes in a variety of forms. You can obtain CBD oils and tinctures, raw leaf, topicals, capsules, and yes, even edibles that include chocolates, gummies, and more.

There are now hundreds of purveyors of CBD products that have flooded the market.  With so many delicious CBD edibles to choose from online, you may wonder where to start. We’ve put together a list of our 10 favorites so you can make your first purchase with confidence.

What’s The Deal With CBD Edibles?

Unlike THC (tetrahydrocannabinol – one of the most widely-known active compounds in cannabis/marijuana), CBD (cannabidiol) does not cause a noticeable high. You won’t feel disassociated or intoxicated in any way when you enjoy edibles made with CBD – only their subtle intended effects.

If you aren’t familiar with CBD yet, you might be asking yourself: “why do people use it if it doesn’t get them high? Isn’t that the point of using cannabis?”

Indeed, many people use cannabis to achieve a psychoactive feeling of intoxication or to induce feelings of relaxation, creativity, and euphoria. However, some users want to enjoy the plant’s therapeutic benefits without jeopardizing their inhibitions. This is where CBD (and CBD edibles) play an essential role.

In the past few years, researchers have learned more about CBD than we’ve ever known before. While more conclusive evidence is needed, scientists are looking into to potential of cannabidiol to help with:

– Feelings of relaxation

Relief from anxiety

– Improved symptoms of depression

Improved sleep

Pain relief

Relief from cancer symptoms (including nausea, lack of appetite, or insomnia)

– Reduction of psychotic symptoms

– Diabetes prevention

– Anti-convulsive benefits for epileptics and people with Parkinson’s Disease

With so many possible benefits and relatively few side effects, CBD is widely considered a ‘Miracle Molecule’ among those who use it.

How Does CBD Work?

That’s the million-dollar question that scientists have been puzzling over for several years, and new studies are being conducted daily to determine the answer. There is still so much that researchers do not understand about CBD. For now, we will focus on what we do know.

In 1988, two receptors–CB1 and CB2– were discovered in the brains of rats. It was found that these receptors responded to THC. But it wasn’t until the mid-1990’s that researchers discovered humans (as well as many other species) also possessed these receptors. By tracing the pathways of different cannabinoids, they found that we possess a whole previously undiscovered body system, which they aptly named the endocannabinoid system. This system is responsible for maintaining homeostasis in the body, and many scientists believe that an endocannabinoid deficiency is responsible for some of the disorders and conditions we (and our beloved pets) experience.

It appears that the same molecule found in cannabis sativa is the exact molecule we need to balance and restore our bodies to an optimal state of health. Of course, historical and anecdotal evidence has existed for years to back up these claims. Ask anyone who smokes marijuana how they benefit from it, and you are likely to get a range of responses from improved sleep to lowered anxiety to pain relief.

Science has uncovered over 65 separate molecular targets in the human body that benefit in some way from cannabis. Our bodies are literally designed to interact with cannabinoids to maintain ideal health and wellness.

However, not everyone wants to light a joint every time they feel anxious or have insomnia. Some people don’t tolerate the overall effects of THC well. Others can’t self-medicate in this way because of rules at work. Luckily, there is an ideal workaround for these obstacles in the form of CBD. This cannabinoid is nearly identical to THC except for its psychoactive effect, and from a legal standpoint, that makes it easier to obtain.

Is CBD Legal?

On December 20, 2018, The Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 was passed into law, and for the first time in over five decades, the Feds took the first significant step forward in legalizing cannabis. While the bill doesn’t completely legalize marijuana, strains of hemp that fall below 0.3% THC have been removed from the list of federally controlled substances, which means that CBD is now finally legal in the eyes of the federal government. Incidentally, this also paves the way for more research, which has been a major obstacle to learning more about the many benefits of cannabis in general

Individual states, however, may have laws that vary when it comes to cannabis products. In particular, Idaho, Nebraska, and South Dakota have restrictions that are more stringent than the other 47 states. If you live in one of these places you will want to be sure that the CBD products you purchase are all sourced from agricultural hemp that has been grown by a licensed cultivar. The edibles on this list meet these requirements and are legal in all 50 states.
